| Choreographer, born in Stoughton, West Sussex, S England, UK. He was educated at Eton and Croydon College of Art (1965–7), and at the London School of Contemporary Dance (1967–70). He co-founded Strider in 1972 (disbanded 1975), the forerunner of the contemporary dance company Second Stride. He studied in New York with Merce Cunningham (1975–7), then joined Ballet Rambert as resident choreographer (1980–6), and artistic director (1986–92). In 1994 he became artistic director of the Richard Alston Dance Company. His focus is on new choreography using the work of a diverse range of composers including J S Bach, Britten, Hoagy Carmichael, Rameau, Stravinsky, and Brahms. The company is based at The Place Theatre, London, which also houses the London Contemporary Dance School. |
