| British statesman, born in Skipton, North Yorkshire, N England, UK. He studied at Cambridge, became a Conservative MP (1950), minister of health (1952–5), minister of labour (1955–9), secretary of state for the Colonies (1959–61), and chairman of the Conservative Party (1961–3). Refusing to serve under Home, he spent two years editing the Spectator (1963–5). Highly popular, and a gifted speaker, he was appointed shadow chancellor (1965–70) under Heath, and after the Conservative victory (1970) became Chancellor of the Exchequer. However, a month later he died suddenly at the age of 57. |
