| Librettist, born in New York City, USA. He wrote the book and lyrics for many operettas and musical comedies. With composer Jerome Kern he wrote Show Boat (1927), a landmark of musical theatre, with such songs as ‘Ol' Man River’ and ‘Only Make Believe’. Later, with composer Richard Rodgers, he wrote some of the greatest musicals, including Oklahoma! (1943, Pulitzer), South Pacific (1949, Pulitzer), The King and I (1951), and The Sound of Music (1959). Oscar Hammerstein I (1847–1919) was his impresario grandfather. |
