| Portrait painter, born in Perpignan, S France. He moved to Paris in 1681, received the second Prix de Rome (1682), and became the principal official painter to the French court of Louis XIV (1688). A prolific artist, he painted most of the notable people at Versailles, producing up to 35 portraits a year, with the help of a large studio of assistants. His major work is a portrait of Louis XIV (1701) in full robes, now in the Louvre. He was a friend and rival of Largillière. |
