| biography:
| Bangladeshi soldier, chief martial law administrator, and president (1983–90). Appointed army chief-of-staff by President Ziaur Rahman in 1978, he repeatedly demanded that the armed forces should be involved in the country's administration. In 1982 he led a bloodless military coup, becoming president the following year. He resigned at the end of 1990, was arrested on charges of plundering the nation, and sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment in 1991. He was released in 1997. |
