| biography:
| Naval officer, born in Henderson, Kentucky, USA. At the time of the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor he was the commander-in-chief of the US fleet. He was suspended from command, and a presidential board of inquiry found him guilty of dereliction of duty (1942), but a naval court found no blame or mistakes in his judgment (1944). He published his side of the controversy in Admiral Kimmel's Story (1955). |
