| biography:
| Radical agitator, born in Upavon, Wiltshire, S England, UK. He was a well-to-do farmer who in 1800 became a staunch radical, and spent the rest of his life advocating the repeal of the Corn Laws, democracy, and parliamentary reform. In 1819, on the occasion of the Peterloo massacre, he delivered a speech which cost him three years' imprisonment. He became an MP in 1831. |
