| Singer, born to British parents in Chennai (formerly Madras), SE India and brought up in Leicester, Leicestershire, C England. He started singing aged 17 at a working-man' club in Leicester, and following national service he resumed his singing career under the stage name Gerry Dorsey, but with little success. In 1965, under the direction of his manager Gordon Mills (who also managed Tom Jones), he changed his name and had his first hit single ‘Release Me’ (1967). It was a UK No 1, keeping the Beatles ‘Penny Lane’ off the top spot, it reached No 4 in the US charts. He had further hits with ‘There Goes My Everything’ (1967) and ‘The Last Waltz’ (1967). He has sold 130 million records, and although after the 1970s he had fewer hit records his career as a cabaret artist blossomed in America. |
