| Painter, probably born in Ghent, NW Belgium. Dean of the painters' guild at Ghent (1473–5), he painted the magnificent Portinari Altarpiece containing ‘The Adoration of the Shepherds’ (c.1475, now in the Uffizi Gallery) for the S Maria Nuova Hospital in Florence, and many other notable works. He spent the last years of his life in the monastery of Soignies, near Brussels. |
