| Writer and academic, born in Melbourne, Victoria, SE Australia. He studied at Oxford and Princeton universities, became a fellow of Balliol College, Oxford (1948–54), and held teaching posts in history (1954–68) and economics (1968–89, then visiting fellow) at the University of Adelaide. His books include The Political Sciences (1969), Ideas for Australian Cities (1970), and Political Essays (1987). An important social theorist with a strong concern for social justice, he was one of the first people to look at the problems of urban Australia, and has criticized many of the trends in contemporary Australian society. |
