| biography:
| Diplomat, born in Evanston, Illinois, USA. After a series of posts with the US Foreign Service (1911–27), he was ambassador to Switzerland (1927–37) and an American delegate to the London Naval Conference (1930). He was assistant secretary of state (1937) and the last pre-war ambassador to Germany (1938–9). Following his recall to protest Nazi treatment of the Jews, he was not replaced. During World War 2 he worked in the Office of Strategic Services (1941–5). He wrote The Education of a Diplomat (1938) and Diplomat Between Wars (1941). |
