| Journalist, born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, UK. Emigrating to the USA in 1745, he founded the New-York Mercury (1752) and continued it for some 30 years. The newspaper wavered in its politics before the American Revolution, and when the British occupied New York he at first removed it to Newark, NJ, then returned to New York and adopted a strongly pro-Tory stance. After the Revolution the newspaper folded. |
