| Actor, born in Anglesey, NW Wales, UK. He began work as a bank clerk, served in the army during World War 2, then joined what is now the Royal Shakespeare Company. A colourful character actor, probably his most notable performance was as Falstaff (1964). He also received acclaim for his roles in The Waltz of the Toreadors (1956) and a New York City production of Look Homeward Angel (1957). He won an Oscar for his performance in the motion picture Ben Hur (1959). |
