| biography:
| US soldier, born in Fort Brady, Michigan, USA. After obtaining a commission (1898) in memory of his father (one of the few officers killed in action during the Spanish-American War), he fought in the Philippines (1889–1901). In World War 1 he played an important role as chief-of-staff of the American First Army. A new style manager and soldier, he excelled in staff and administrative assignments during the ensuing years, but was passed over for army chief-of-staff in 1939 in favour of George C Marshall. He commanded home front units until his retirement (1943), when he became president of the Empire State Corp. |
