| biography:
| Missionary and educator, born in Suq al Gharb, Syria. His father, Daniel Bliss (1823–1916), was the founder and president (1866–1902) of Syrian Protestant College (later renamed the American University of Beirut). Howard studied at the Union Theological Seminary (1887), was a Congregational minister in Montclair, NJ (1894–1902), and succeeded his father as president of Syrian Protestant College (1903–20). During his tenure he increased the size of the non-Christian student body, and through frankness and diplomacy kept the college intact during World War 1. He died in New Hampshire and was buried near Mount Monadnock. |
