| Actor, born in London, UK. He made his film debut in 1914, and turned to the theatre after being invalided home from the Western Front. During the 1930s he had many leading film roles, including The Scarlet Pimpernel (1935), Pygmalion (1938, co-director), and as Ashley Wilkes in Gone with the Wind (1939). He appeared in several British wartime productions, such as The First of the Few (1942), and is thought to have been killed when a special mission flight from Lisbon to London was shot down. |
