| Art historian, born in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. He studied at the University of Wisconsin (1949 BA; 1952 MA) and at Harvard (1958 PhD). He taught art history primarily at Columbia University (from 1966) and worked as editor-in-chief of The Art Bulletin (1961–78). He specialized in Renaissance and Baroque Italian art and architecture. |
