| biography:
| Gynaecologist and surgeon, born in Camden, New Jersey, USA. After taking his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania (1882), he made several visits to Europe to learn about the more advanced gynaecological methods. He founded the Kensington Hospital for Women in Philadelphia. He went to Baltimore (1889) as gynaecologist-in-chief at the new Johns Hopkins Hospital, then also became a professor of gynaecology at Johns Hopkins Medical School (1893–1919), making Baltimore one of America's premier gynaecology centres. He developed several new surgical techniques and diagnostic procedures, was one of the first American doctors to use radium to treat cancer, and wrote or edited several books on medical subjects. |
