| biography:
| Algerian soldier, statesman, and president (1965–78), born in Guelma, NE Algeria. He studied at al-Azhar University in Cairo, and became a teacher. In 1954 he joined the FLN (Algerian National Liberation Front) for whom he conducted guerrilla operations against the French, serving as chief-of-staff (1960–2) with the rank of colonel. When Algeria gained independence in 1962, he became minister of national defence. In 1965 he led a military coup against President Ben Bella and established an Islamic Socialist government. Shortly before his death, he was seeking to establish a North African Socialist federation. |
