| Actor and director, born in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, E England, UK. He left school at 15 and sampled numerous occupations before choosing acting and making his debut in Romeo and Juliet (1969) at Stoke-on-Trent. Avidly learning his craft, his notable stage performances include Richard III (1971), The Iceman Cometh (1976), and Guys and Dolls (1981). He achieved widespread public recognition with Dennis Potter's television series Pennies From Heaven (1978), as the menacing hoodlum in the film The Long Good Friday (1980), and the minder in Mona Lisa (1986, BAFTA best actor). After several years as a reliable and much-employed supporting actor in films he acquired international stardom with his award-winning performance in Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988). He wrote and directed The Raggedy Rawney (1987), an anti-war saga about gypsies. Later films include Hook (1991), Nixon (1995), in which he played J Edgar Hoover, The Secret Agent (1996), Felicia's Journey (1999), and Last Orders (2001). |
