| Jazz musician, born in Norwalk, Connecticut, USA. An influential pianist and composer, he helped to develop and popularize the hard-bop style in the mid-1950s. He performed with Stan Getz and Coleman Hawkins in 1950–3, was a co-founder of the Jazz Messengers (1954), and led his own groups after that. |
