| biography:
| Conservationist and business executive, born in Bishop, California, USA. The son of a millwright, he studied at the University of California and was admitted to the bar (1914). As an official of the US Department of the Interior, he helped found the National Park Service (1916), served as superintendent of Yellowstone National Park (1919–29), and became the second director of the park service (1929–33). He resigned in order to start a second career in business as vice-president and general manager of the United States Potash Co, rising to company president in 1946. |
