| biography:
| Prospector and merchant, born in Holland, Vermont, USA. He moved to Colorado, made a fortune from a silver mine (1878), and built a hotel and two opera houses in Colorado. He filled an unexpired term in the US Senate (Republican, Colorado, 1883). He lost his fortune and was penniless by 1893, and was made postmaster of Denver to spare him the humiliation of total destitution. His second wife was Baby Doe, who ended her life (1935) freezing to death in the shack at the mouth of the mine she was convinced would still yield more silver. |
