| Pope (625–38). He supported the Christianization of the Anglo-Saxons, sending St Birinus to Wessex, and persuaded the Celtic Church to accept the Roman liturgy and date of Easter. In the Monothelite controversy he abstained from condemning the new doctrines, and for so doing was stigmatized as a heretic at the Council of Constantinople (680). |
