| Painter and caricaturist, born in Marseille, S France. He won contemporary fame for satirical cartoons about government corruption, and was imprisoned for caricaturing the king. An opponent of artificial Classicism, he painted strongly realistic subject pictures, such as The Third Class Carriage (c.1862, New York City). |
