| Bibliographer and literary scholar, born in Granada, S Spain. He was a disciple of R Menéndez Pidal (whose bibliography he compiled in 1931) and of A Morel-Fatio. Head of the department of bibliography in the Centro de Estudios Históricos in Madrid (1925–36), he emigrated to the USA during the Spanish Civil War and became a naturalized citizen in 1941. He was director of the Centro de Estudios Hispánicos at Syracuse University (New York) from 1945 until his retirement, and produced an indispensable tool for Hispanists: the Manual de bibliografía de la literatura española (Part I only published, 2 vols, 1948–54). |
