| Archaeologist, born in Devlin, Ontario, Canada. He studied at the University of Michigan (1929 PhD) and became a naturalized US citizen. He was simultaneously professor of classical archaeology at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton (1947–77), and field director of the Athenian agora (1947–67). An expert on the history and monuments of Athens, his Guide to the Athenian Agora (1976) was admired by both scholars and non-specialists. |
