| Relief and welfare worker, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvaina, USA. She was a lifelong charity worker. During the Civil War she and Mary Livermore directed the Chicago branch of the Sanitary Commission, coordinating 1000 local aid societies, improving field distribution of supplies, and raising funds through extensive lecture tours and the great Chicago Sanitary Fair (1863). |
