| Golfer, born in Dublin, Texas, USA. A professional at various country clubs, he fought his way to the top despite financial difficulties, and in 1948 became the first man in 26 years to win all three US major titles. He had a near-fatal car accident in 1949, but amazed everyone by his determination to continue playing, and despite pain from his injuries he returned to win a further three major titles in 1953. He won the US Open four times (1948, 1950–1, 1953) before retiring in 1970 with a grand total of 63 US Professional Golf Association tour victories. A film on his life, Follow the Sun, starring Glenn Ford, was made in 1951, and he wrote an influential manual on the game in 1957. |
