| Japanese statesman and premier (1885–8, 1892–6, 1898, 1900–1), born in Choshu province, S Japan. He visited Europe and the USA on several occasions, drafted the Meiji constitution (1889), and played a major role in abolishing Japanese feudalism and building up the modern state. He was assassinated at Harbin by a supporter of Korean independence. |
