| biography:
| Chemist and inventor, born in Draguignan, SE France. He patented margarine in its original form in 1869, winning the prize offered by the French government for an economical butter substitute. His margarine was manufactured from tallow, and it was not until F Boudet patented a process for emulsifying it with skimmed milk and water in 1872 that it could be made sufficiently palatable to be a commercial success. |
