| Psychiatrist and writer, born in Duelken, Germany. She studied medicine at the University of Freiburg and was active in psychology research and paediatrics until the Nazi occupation of 1933. She emigrated to New York City and taught at Columbia University (1934–64) while practising psychoanalysis. In 1965 she joined the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. She is best known for her work on eating disorders, including The Golden Cage: The Enigma of Anorexia Nervosa (1978). |
