| biography:
| Poet and art critic, born in Gouda, W Netherlands. Originally a barrister, he wrote the first Dutch theoretical assertion of Romanticism against classicism. He stressed the importance of originality, and, as an orthodox Christian, his poetry was moralizing and edifying. He is best remembered for his children's verse. |
