| biography:
| Footballer, born in Yamanashi, Japan. By age 14 he was playing for the Japanese Youth team, and he began playing professionally for Shonan Bellmare after leaving school in 1995. He gained his first international cap in 1997 at age 20, and his scoring ability was instrumental in Japan's place in the finals of the FIFA World Cup (France, 1998). After a spell with AC Perugia, he signed for AS Roma for a figure in the region of £13 million in January 2000. He played for only one season before transferring to AC Parma for a fee of £18·5 million. Seen as representative of a new, less traditional generation in his country, he enjoys near pop-star status among young Japanese people. |
