| Chemist, born in Tokyo, Japan. He studied at the Tokyo Institute of Technology (1966), and became professor of chemistry at the University of Tsukuba (1979). He shared the 2000 Nobel Prize for Chemistry with Alan J Heeger and Alan G MacDiarmid for their discovery and development of conductive polymers. |
