| biography:
| Writer, born near Pwllheli, Gwynedd, NW Wales, UK. In 1763 she married Henry Thrale, a prosperous brewer. Dr Samuel Johnson conceived an extraordinary affection for her, and lived in her house at Streatham Park for over 16 years. Thrale also esteemed Johnson, and made him one of his four executors. Thrale died in 1781, and in 1784 the brewery was sold. The widow then became attached to the Italian musician Gabriel Piozzi, whom she married in 1784 - with Johnson feeling somewhat slighted as a consequence. She wrote poems and published Anecdotes of the late Samuel Johnson (1786) and Letters to and from Dr Johnson (1788). |
