| biography:
| King of Judaea (41–4), the grandson of Herod the Great. Reared at the court of the Emperor Augustus, Agrippa's early contacts with the imperial family stood him in good stead later on. Caligula gave him two-thirds of the former kingdom of Herod the Great, while Claudius added the remaining third, the Judaean heartland (41). Loved by the Jews, despite being a Roman appointee, and an active Hellenizer, he was no friend to the Christians, executing St James and imprisoning St Peter. |
