| Architect, born in Córdoba, S Spain. The most important figure of the classical Andalusian renaissance, he worked in Córdoba, where he constructed the Benamejí Bridge (1550–6). In 1554 he moved to Málaga and later to Sevilla, where he continued the construction of the Hospital de la Sangre, begun by Gaínza. Here he completed the sketches of the church (1560), the most important organization of classical Spanish religious building before El Escorial. He wrote Un Manuscrito de arquitectura which includes architectural inventions, geometrical problems, fortification, and health. |
