| biography:
| Dutch priest, politician, and writer, born in Tubergen, E Netherlands. In 1870–80 he taught at the Seminary in Rijsenburg. A champion of Catholic emancipation, he believed the Catholics should co-operate with anti-revolutionaries, not with liberals. He worked with A Kuyper to widen the suffrage in the 1887 constitutional revision. He edited De Tijd (1872–83), De Wachter (1871–85), Haagsche Stemmen (1885–90), and De Katholiek (from 1990). His involvement with the School Funding Controversy (Schoolstrijd) and expanding suffrage brought him great popularity. |
