| Writer, born in Stuttgart, SW Germany. He studied German, archaeology, and philosophy, and was an American prisoner-of-war in World War 2. His many novels and short stories include Der russische Regenboge (1959), Die Augen eines Dieners (1976), and Tagebuch von Überleben (1978). His writing is influenced by magical realism and depicts an inner, subjective world in poetic language. He was awarded the Georg-Büchner-Preis in 1978 and the Petrarca Preis in 1987. |
