| Writer, born in Podwolotschisk, Ukraine. Working as a literary editor, he emigrated to New York in 1940 where he helped other emigrant writers. His writing, the satirical quality of which is influenced by Heinrich Mann, is socially critical and includes the novels Josef sucht die Freiheit (1927), Die Kinder von Gernika (1939), and Der Mohr von Kastilien (1974). He also wrote poetry and plays, and was awarded the Georg-Büchner-Preis in 1974. |
