| Writer, born in Hamburg, N Germany. One of the most important figures in East German literature, his writing is largely concerned with contemporary problems, which he interprets through past memories. He uses humour and irony in the treatment of his characters, as in Ein bißchen Südsee (1962), a realistic portrayal of ordinary people, and in Die Aula (1965). |
