Professor of chemistry at Giessen (1843–63) and Heidelberg (1863–90), his studies of the relationship of physical properties to the chemical structure of compounds formed the basis of modern physical organic chemistry. He is also noted for his Geschichte der Chemie (1843–7, History of Chemistry). |
