| Writer, born in Jessnitz, EC Germany. His book Lieder eines Sünders (1887), with its confessional elements, shows the individual's struggle between the spiritual and the baser elements of his character. His novel Adam Mensch (1889), with its frank portrayal of sexual themes, was the subject of a trial in which he was found guilty of gross indecency and the book was banned. His writing was influenced by Dostojewski, Zola, and Nietszche, among others. He was a pioneer of Naturalism. |
