| biography:
| Bandleader, alto saxophonist, and jazz clarinettist, born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. He was a member of the band led by Isham Jones, but when this broke up (1936) he took certain key members as the nucleus of his own first band, the Woodchoppers, which became noted for the way it blended saxophones (the ‘Woodchopper's Ball’ became his theme tune). The Herman Orchestra (or ‘Herd’) was one of the very few big bands to survive intact beyond the 1950s, continuing to tour throughout the 1970s and 80s, and nurturing the talents of scores of fine jazz players. |
