| biography:
| British soldier and colonial administrator. He served in Sudan (1884) and led the Rhodesian relief force to Mafeking (1900). In World War 1 he distinguished himself as commander of the 2nd Army of the British Expeditionary Force (1915–18), notably at the great attack on Messines, and was also in command of the Italian Expeditionary Force (1917–18). He was made a field marshal in 1919, and became Governor of Malta (1919–24) and high commissioner for Palestine (1925–8). |
