| Journalist, born in St Louis, Missouri, USA. A World War 1 correspondent for the New York World, he won a 1917 Pulitzer Prize for his dispatches. He became executive editor of the newspaper in the 1920s, promoted numerous crusades, and developed a widely imitated Op Ed page. An associate of Bernard Baruch, he reportedly coined the phrase ‘cold war’, usually credited to Baruch. |
