| biography:
| Mathematical physicist, born in New York City, USA. He studied at the City College of New York and Maryland University, then worked in the US Naval Research Laboratories in Washington until 1970, and afterwards at the Medical Foundation of Buffalo. With Jerome Karle he devised new methods for computing molecular structures from X-ray crystal diffraction data. The major advances made led to them sharing the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1985. |
