| King of Germany as Henry I from 919. The founder of the Saxon dynasty, he was Duke of Saxony from 912. He brought Swabia and Bavaria into the German confederation, regained Lotharingia (Lorraine, 925), defeated the Wends in 928 and the Hungarians in 933, and seized Schleswig from Denmark in 934. He is said to have been laying bird snares when informed of his election as king, hence his nickname. |
