| King of Germany, Italy, and Burgundy, and Holy Roman Emperor, born in Nijmegen, E Netherlands. The son of Frederick I Barbarossa and Beatrice of Burgundy, he married Costanza d'Altavilla in 1186. At his father's death he faced opposition from Tancredi of Lecce, who was supported by the Sicilian barons, the pope, the German princes, and Richard the Lionheart, King of England. He succeeded in getting Celestine III to crown him emperor (1191) and obtained the Sicilian throne after Tancredi's death in 1194. |
